New gay marriage laws
While the fight for gay marriage to be recognized by every state and the federal government is a long way from over, legal New Jersey gay marriages have a chance of being recognized. Currently, New Jersey marriages do not include any gay couples but the state does recognize same-sex unions. Same-sex unions give gay couple some of the same state rights that heterosexual New Jersey marriages get. The problem is that there are over 1, rights regarding marriage that only the federal government recognizes. So between New Jersey gays having to settle for civil-unions and the federal government not giving them any of the rights that New Jersey marriages benefit from, a fight will continue to win the battle for legal same-sex New Jersey marriages. A ban on New Jersey gay marriage is one of those old-school type of laws that may someday seem ridiculous much like segregation.

New York 6th state to legalize gay marriage

The Constitution protects religious beliefs. They would allow discrimination against gays and lesbians by those who have a religious objection to same-sex marriage. Alito and Thomas made their views known on Monday when the court denied review in what should have been an easy case involving Kim Davis, a court clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue wedding licenses to same-sex couples. If Davis had prevailed, then clerks with a religious objection to interracial or interfaith marriages could likewise refuse to issue marriage licenses. The right of couples to marry, which the Supreme Court has deemed a fundamental liberty, cannot be made to depend on the religious beliefs of those who issue marriage licenses. Until reading Thomas on Monday, I had naively assumed that the issue of marriage equality between gays and lesbians had been firmly settled by the court. But Justices Thomas and Alito have now made it clear they are eager to overrule that decision , and they could well have support from the other conservatives on the court.
