Is online dating really making us more promiscuous?

Not in the distant past, people used to meet their significant others through local hangouts, work, or social circles. This was admittedly viewed as a limiting way to meet new people. Nowadays, it seems like most of us are expanding our dating pool by going online. There are many pros and cons to online dating, but it comes as no surprise that many people have met their current partners through dating applications and websites. Once seen as taboo and 'desperate,' it has now become the accepted norm. But just because it's common to date online in the modern world doesn't necessarily mean it works. It doesn't a lot of the time.

Is Tinder Being Used Mostly For Friendship?

You may have seen some recent coverage of a study that says online dating leads to more breakups than meeting IRL, but before you go crazy with the delete button on all your profiles, you should definitely take a closer look at the facts. The first wave of data from includes a sample of 2, respondents, of which 1, reported being married and 1, reported being in a romantic relationship. Out of the total sample, only met their partners online. By the time the second wave of data was collected in using online and phone surveys, 32 percent of unmarried couples who met online had broken up versus 23 percent of couples who had met offline. There was no significant change for married couples until the third wave of data was collected, which found that eight percent of married couples who met their spouse online had broken up, while only 2 percent of couples who had met offline had split up.
Previous studies that compared differences in the outcomes of relationships that begin online compared to traditional offline venues have primarily looked at marital relationships. The present study extends this investigation by including non-marital relationships in the comparison. It further investigates if the breakup rate of relationships both marital and non-marital varies as a result of meeting online versus offline, and if other factors outside of the meeting venue predict relationship dissolution. Results suggest that couples who met their partners online were more likely to be involved in dating and romantic relationships than marital relationships compared to couples who met offline.
